SCHENECTADY, NY - The Union College Dutchmen won their second straight non-conference match, defeating Castleton State 2-0 on Saturday night. Sophomore
Andrew Fontaine provided the offense for Union as he netted both goals.
The Spartans tried to clear the ball after the blocked
Sam Hunter shot, however they were unsuccessful. The ball went right to Fontaine who drilled it home to give the Dutchmen the early 1-0 advantage.
Union (7-7-1) had several close chances to increase their lead over the next five minutes. Michael Kaye first had a close range header sail high. Then
Carl Faber had three straight chances to pick up his seventh goal of the season but was not able to do so. Faber first put his header on net only see it hit the post before being cleared. Two minutes later, Faber had another chance but this time his header flew just over the crossbar. Two more minutes later, Faber had a one-on-one with the Castleton State goalkeeper. The keeper made a jumping one-handed save to push the ball into the air. The ball continued towards the goal and nearly went in but hit the crossbar and the Spartans were able to send it towards midfield.
Castleton State (6-8-1) had their first shot of the game in the final minute of the first half but
Ryan Carter made a diving save to keep it 1-0 heading into the break. Carter stopped two shots in the win as the senior picked up his fourth clean sheet of the season.
Fontaine put the game away in the 75th minute as he went upper 90 to give Union the 2-0 edge.
Ethan Strauss and
Doug Rosa both saw their shots just inside the 18 blocked by defenders before Fontaine fired his shot past everyone for his second goal of the game and fourth of the season.
Union finished the game with a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks and outshot Castleton State 16-3.
The "U" will play non-conference opponent Alfred University on Wednesday night at 7:00 PM before closing out the season with three-straight Liberty League contests.
