SCHENECTADY, NY - The Union College Dutchwomen skated to a 2-2 tie against Penn State on Saturday afternoon.
Rebecca Babiak and
Kelly McGrath each picked up their first goals of the season in the contest.
Babiak got the Dutchwomen on the scoreboard first at the 10:38 mark of the opening period. The junior knocked home the rebound after
Emily Erickson's wrister was saved by the Nittany Lion goaltender. The rebound fell right to Babiak who put it in to give Union the 1-0 lead.
Penn State (2-2-2) tied it up just under two minutes into the second period as Amy Peterson netted her second goal in as many games against the Dutchwomen. Shanae Lundberg made several great saves in the remaining 18 minutes including two nifty kick saves to keep the score knotted at one apiece.
With just 1:54 remaining in the second stanza on Union (1-4-1) on the powerplay,
Kelly McGrath went top shelf on a slapshot to put the Dutchwomen in front 2-1. Freshman
Brandy Streeter notched her first collegiate assist and point on the play.
The Nittany Lions would tie it up three minutes into the third period as Kelly Seward scored off the feed of Bella Sutton on the Penn State powerplay. Neither team could break through in the rest of regulation as the game went to the extra period tied at two.
Both defenses stepped in the overtime session as both teams combined for just three shots on goal in the extra five minutes with no real scoring threat. Lundberg made 35 saves in the contest while freshman netminder Hannah Ehresman made 20 saves in the tie.
Union will travel to Vermont next weekend as the Dutchwomen will play the Catamounts for a two-game series starting Friday night at 7:00 PM.
