Strauss's Second Half Goal Lifts Union to Win on Senior Day

SCHENECTADY, NY - The Union College men's soccer team stayed alive in the Liberty League playoff hunt by defeating RIT 1-0 on Saturday afternoon. Before the start of the contest, Union honored their five senior student-athletes during introductions.

After a scoreless first half, junior Carl Faber almost broke the tie in the 50th minute as he got off a header from right in the middle of the box but the ball hit the post before being cleared.

Nine minutes later in the the 59th minute, Faber once again had another scoring opportunity but was denied by the post for second time. However, freshman Ethan Strauss was there to knock in the rebound for his fifth goal on the season to give the Dutchmen a 1-0 edge.

Faber almost sealed the game in the 82nd minute as he had a nice looking header that looked ticketed for the back of the net but the Tigers goalkeeper made a great one-handed diving dave to keep the score at 1-0. The junior finished with a match-high six shots.

The Dutchmen were able to stave off RIT for the remaining eight minutes to hold on to the 1-0 win. Senior Ryan Carter made seven saves to collect his fifth shutout of the season.

Union outshot the Tigers 15-11 and the corner kicks were even at four a piece.

The Garnet and White will conclude the regular season on the road with must win games against Vassar on Wednesday night followed by the regular season finale at Skiidmore on Saturday afternoon.
