SCHENECTADY, NY - RPI scored just over two minutes into the contest Tuesday night to give Union their third straight 1-0 defeat by a Liberty League opponent. The Dutchmen fall to 5-6-1 overall and 1-3 in the conference while the Engineers move to 8-2-2 and 3-1 in the league.
Ryan Carter posted three saves in the loss.
Matt Carberry flew through the box to deflect the ball off the free kick from Paul Lentine into the back of the net just 2:17 into the game to give RPI the early 1-0 advantage.
Union controlled the pace of play from then, outshooting the Engineers 16-7 including a 9-3 edge in shots on goal. However, sophomore RPI goalkeeper Alex Kessler stopped all nine of the Dutchmen chances to give RPI the shutout. The "U" also held a 12-2 advantage in corner kicks in the match.
The Dutchmen had several chances to tie the game. In the 41st minute,
Jeff Cohen put a header right on net but Kessler was able to save it. Kessler's momentuem almost brought him across the goal line but he was able to just barely avoid crossing the line with ball. Just after halftime,
Andrew Fontaine had a close range header from inside the six but Kessler picked up one of his nine stops by using his outstretched body to keep the ball from going in.
Union will look to snap their current three game losing streak as they travel to Hobart this Saturday.
