Union Ends Season With 1-0 Win Over Vassar

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Needing a win and some help to qualify for the Liberty League Tournament, Union (11-4-2) got half the equation right. Senior Whitney Bickford scored the only goal Union needed in a 1-0 win over Vassar at College Park.  Earlier in the day however, St. Lawrence defeated Clarkson, denying the Dutchwomen a spot in the tourney on the final day of the season.

Union finished in a fourth-place tie with RIT, compiling 11 points with a 3-2-2 league record.  The Tigers, though, snagged the fourth and final spot in the league tournament based on the head-to-head tiebreaker – a double-overtime victory against Union on Oct. 25.

The domino effect caused by a tight league race also affected Vassar, which saw its hopes for a tournament berth dashed in the loss to Union.  The Dutchwomen were able to return the favor after suffering a similar fate last year in Poughkeepsie.

Bickford's goal in her final game came at the 35:59 mark, as she weaved into the box and placed a shot inside the far post for her team-leading sixth tally of the season.  Katie Monahan and Stacey Sylvetsky assisted on the play.

Allison Brustowicz recorded her eighth shutout of the season, and the 15th of her career, with a three-save effort.

Saturday's contest marked the final appearance for the nine-member senior class, which compiled a four-year record of 48-19-3 (.707).  The class included: Bickford, Brustowicz and Sylvetsky, along with Caroline Brustowicz, Jenna Cornwall, Mollie Gilchrist, Kara Mashuta, Kara Modliszewski and Julia Shively.  Gilchrist, who compiled 28 goals and 19 assists for 75 career points, did not miss a game in four seasons, appearing in 70 games.
