NEW YORK, NY -- William Hython scored 22 points with eight rebounds as the Union College men's basketball team defeated host New York University 64-62 at the Coles Sports Center Sunday night. The Violets had won five straight NYU Tip Off Tournament titles until the Dutchmen took the championship game tonight.
Hython was named the Tournament Most Valuable Player while
Deshon Burgess and
Ryan Whelpley were also named to the All-Tournamnet Team. The Dutchmen improved to 2-0.
Hython was 10 for 18 and had seven of his rebounds on the defensive side. He made a layup with two seconds left to make it 64-62. Burgess scored 19 points with five assists and made seven of nine free throws.
Kevin Weckworth added eight for the Dutchmen and Whelpley added six steals for the Dutchmen, who shot 43%.
Evan Kupferberg scored 22 points with 12 rebounds for NYU and Costis Gontikas added 12 with eight boards. The Violets shot 48% and had a 37-26 rebounding advantage.
Union is idle until November 25 when the Dutchmen play at Hartwick.
