POTSDAM, NY - The Union College volleyball program fell in four sets to Clarkson in the first round of the Liberty League Championship Tournament on Friday night. Union finishes the season 24-12. The 24 victories are the most during head coach
Melissa DeRan's four seasons at the helm and the most in a season since 2008 when the Dutchwomen went 36-6.
Rachel Wyman tied a match-high wih 17 kills and
Morgan Clark added six blocks.
Amanda Price had a double-double with 18 assists and 10 digs and
Katherine Moeller recorded 28 digs to lead both squads.
Union was able to keep the first set close thanks to a strong defensive effort. The Dutchwomen were in front by three points following a kill from Price (14-11) but Clarkson went on an 8-2 run over the next 10 points to take a three-point lead. The Golden Knights were able to hold the advantage as Clarkson finished the set with the three-point win (25-22).
The Garnet and White was able to keep the second set close until the midway point, when Clarkson came out of a 14-14 tie scoring 11 of the final 16 points, including six of the final eight to take the second set 25-18.
The Dutchwomen stayed alive as they reduced their errors in the third set while frustrating and confusing the Knights on defense. Wyman picked up six kills in the set to lead Union to the 25-19 win.
Clarkson controlled the fourth set, striking for 19 kills with eight coming from Katrina Lane and Danielle Farabee. The Golden Knights, behind the strong offensive output, downed the Dutchwomen 25-13 to take the set and the match.
