Dutchmen down Rochester, 67-63

SCHENECTADY, NY -- Terell Winney scored 15 points and William Hython added 14 to lead the Union College men's basketball team to a 67-63 victory over the University of Rochester in a non-league game Saturday afternoon at the Viniar Athletic Center. The Dutchmen improve to 5-2 while the Yellowjackets now are 4-6.

Zachary Bouton made two key baskets for five points in the final five minutes to break a tie, and also added a game high five assists for Union. Ryan Whelpley led the hosts with eight rebounds for Union, whch shot 42% and held Rochester to 38% from the floor. It was Union's first victory over Rochester since February 24, 1989 when the Dutchmen won 75-73 at Union's Memorial Field House.

Jared Seltzer led the Yellowjackets with a double-double, with game highs of 18 points and 11 rebounds. Sam Brost-Smith scored 12 and Mack Montague added 11, while Dylan Peretz pulled down nine rebounds. Rochester and Union both had 40 rebounds for the night.

The Yellowjackets led by six at 34-28 at halftime, and led 36-30 27 seconds into the second half. But the Dutchmen tied it with a 6-0 run, and it was tied at 43-43 with 14:49 left in the second half. That's when Union went on a 8-0 run over the next 52 seconds for a 51-43 advantage led by four points each from Hython and Winney. Union led 53-45 with 13:03 left before the Yellowjackets went on a 12-3 run for a 57-56 lead with 7:45 left after two free throws by Seltzer. With the game tied at 59-59 with 5:30 left after a Seltzer layup, Bouton his a jumper with 4:54 left for a 61-59 lead, putting Union up for good. Burgess made it a four point lead but after Peretz scored on a layup with 3:28 left Rochester called timeout trailing by two. Bouton then made a big three pointer with 44 seconds left for a five point lead at 66-61, and Borst-Smith followed with a layup with 38 seconds remaining to make it a three point game at 66-63. But Hython made the first of two free throws with six seconds left to seal the victory.

Union is idle until the end of the month, when the Dutchmen play at the Emory Tournament in Atlanta. Union plays Birmingham Southern on December 29 at 2 p.m. and either Emory or Bates on December 30 at 2 or 4 p.m. Rochester is at Ohio Northern on January 6 at 4 p.m.
