Kate Thompson recorded a double-double with 14 points and a game high 14 rebounds in Union's 54-52 non-league loss to Hamilton at the Viniar Athletic Center Wednesday night. The Dutchwomen fell to 3-2 after their home opener while the Continentals now stand 5-3.
Jenni Barra scored a career high 14 with seven rebounds and Cailin Scmeer tallied 14. Union had a 47-40 rebounding advantage and both teams shot 34% in the defensive efforts. Sam Graber scored a game best 18 points with a team high of eight rebounds, and Adrianna Pulford down seven boards. Samantha Srinivasan tallied nine with four assists. The double-double was the second this season for Thompson and the seventh of her career.
Hamilton had a 30-23 lead at the half, and led by six at 43-37 with just 6:51 left in the second half. The Dutchwomen went on a 9-3 run over the next 2:24, as Thompson's layup tied it up at 46-46. A layup by Barra with 3:14 left made it 48-46 Dutchwomen, and after a free throw by Getman at 2:49, it was back up to three at 50-47 when Thompson made a basket. Graber's free throw at 1:36 pulled the Continentals to within two and with 1:00 left in regulation, Srinvasan made two free throws and the game was knotted at 50-50. Schmeer's bucket with 45 seconds left to play in the second half gave Union a 52-50 advantage. After a Union timeout, Srinvasan hit a three pointer with 25 seconds remaining for a 53-52 lead. Union missed a layup in the final seconds and a foul put Graber to the line, and her first free throw with 1.3 seconds on the clock was good for the 54-52 score. The second was a miss but rebounded be Hamilton as time expired.
Union returns to action December 9 for another non-league game, at home vs. Utica at 6 p.m.
