Hython posts second straight double double in 84-73 win over Bard



SCHENECTADY, NY -- William Hython recorded his second straight double double with 16 points and 14 rebounds as the Union College men's basketball team defeated Bard College, 84-73 at the Viniar Athletic Center Wednesday night. The Dutchmen are now 4-7 in Liberty League play and 7-12 overall, while the Raptors stand 5-16 overall and 0-12 in the league.

Hython had 11 defensive boards and recorded his fifth double double for his season. Both totals were teame highs (the 14 rebounds produced a game high) and he made seven of 12 shots from the floor. Ryan Whelpley had 10 points and 10 rebounds, his fifth double double of the season. Kevin Weckworth scored 13 points and Terell Winney and Deshon Burgess scored 12 each while Keith Callies added 10. Union shot 53% in the first half and for the game and shot 54% in the second half while holding Bard to 21% shooting in that half. Union outrebounded the visitors, 40-28.

Lamar Powell led Bard with a game high 19 points and Siondueh Burnette and Pat Lichtenstein scored 13 each. Burnett pulled down eight boards and Bard finished with a 45% shooting mark.

The Dutchmen led 38-32 at halftime but Bard tied the contest at 41-41 3:20 into the second half. Union then went on a 10-0 run over the next 3:00, and led by as many as 13 with 4:12 left after a jumper by Weckworth made it 74-61. The Raptors got as close as nine with 38 seconds left and later with five seconds left, but Union made four free throws over the final 30 seconds.

Union has three straight games on the road in Liberty League play. A Union-Bard rematch comes right up Friday night at Bard, followed by a game at Vassar Saturday.
