Skidmore downs Dutchmen, 84-68


SCHENECTADY, NY -- Erik Sanders scored 28 points and had seven rebounds, both game highs, to lead Skidmore College to an 84-68 men's basketball victory at Union College's Viniar Athletic Center Friday night. The Thoroughbreds improved to 16-8 on the year and 10-5 in the Liberty League, while the Dutchmen stand 9-14 overall and 6-9 in league play.

Connor Merrill talied 19 points and had four blocks while Aldin Medunjanin scored 11 and Perun Kovacevic added 10 with six rebounds. The guests shot 55% for the game and had a 32-28 rebounding edge while making 73% of the shots from the free throw line.

Terell Winney and William Hython both led Union with 14 points. Deshon Burgess scored 12 and Kevin Weckworth added 11. Ryan Whelpley and Ray Bethel each had five rebounds and the Dutchmen shot 40% for the game. Union had a big night at the line, making 91% (19 for 21) and hit for 54% of the three point attempts.

A see-saw first half ended with a 38-37 Skidmore lead. But Skidmore hit for 58% of the three point attempts in a 46 point second half. With Skidmore ahead by two at 42-40 after Weckworth hit a three for Union with 17:46 left in the second half, the Thoroughbreds had a 16-7 run over the next 4:10 as a Tanner Brooks three made it 58-47. Union was within six at 63-57 on a free throw by Winney at 10:50. But a Skidmore run of 8-1 capped by a Sanders three made it 70-57 with 6:43 left. The lead remained in double digits for the remainder of the contest.

Union will close out the 2013-14 season at home for a Liberty League game against RPI Saturday at 4 p.m. It will be Senior Day at the Viniar Athletic Center. Skidmore, which will compete in next week's Liberty League Tournament, ends the regular season at home against RIT at 4 p.m.
