SCHENECTADY, NY -- Seniors
Kelsey McDonald and
Amy Loya scored 16 and 14 respectively to lead the Union College women's basketball team to an 80-67 Liberty League win over RPI at the Viniar Athletic Center Saturday. The Dutchwomen closed out the 2013-14 season with a 16-9 record, and 8-8 in the league. The Engineers finished 7-18 and 5-11 in the Liberty League.
McDonald also had 11 assists, while senior
Brittney Kenney had a game high 12 rebounds with seven points. Those three seniors were joined by
Madeline Granato,
Kim Derosier,
Kristin Schmidt and
Nora Swidler with pre-game honors prior to the final game of their careers.
Cailin Schmeer led all players with 20 points and Union outrebounded RPI, 41-35. The Dutchwomen shot 50% for the game.
RPI was led by Amanda Lynch, who had team highs of 18 points and seven rebounds. Ashley Clough added 13 points and Courtney Reynolds scored nine for the Engineers, who shot 39% but made 78% of the free throws on the day.
Trailing 23-21 with 7:22 left, the Dutchwomen went on a 19-2 run over the next 5:15 for a 16 point lead. Union had a 44-28 halftime lead in a half that featured a 26-6 scoring advantage. Schmeer had 12 points at the half. In the second half, the Dutchwomen got up by as many as 21 twice, with 15:51 left (55-34) and with 3:54 remaining (73-52).
Union's seniors had a total of 57 wins over their four seasons.
