Hython's high of 28 lifts Dutchmen to OT win at St. Lawrence, 77-75

CANTON, NY -- William Hython scored a career high 28 points and had 11 rebounds to lead to a 77-75 overtime victory at St. Lawrence's Burkman Gymnasium Friday night. The victory moves Union to 6-10 (3-5) and avenges a last-second loss to St. Lawrence earlier this season.

Kyle Edwards led the hosts with 21 points, and the Saints (6-12, 2-7) also had 15-point efforts from both Brady Condlin and Kyle Kobis, but shot 6-for-14 from the free throw line in the second half.

St. Lawrence scored on six of its opening nine possessions to open up a 14-7 lead 4:36 into the game. Hython would help claw the Dutchmen back midway through the half, scoring eight straight Union points as his team tied it at 19-19. Hython and Deshon Burgess each scored baskets down the stretch to give the visitors a 32-28 halftime lead, as the Saints failed to score in the final 4:33 of the period.

Union continued to hold the lead early in the second half, but quickly saw a five-point cushion turn into a four-point deficit thanks to a pair of threes from Edwards and another from Kobis for a 42-38 St. Lawrence lead. The Saints grew their lead to nine, 58-49, with 4:21 remaining.

However, Kevin Weckworth got hot for Union, as he drilled four threes pulling his team to within one, 60-69, with 1:49 remaining. The teams exchanged baskets, but Burgess gave the Dutchmen the lead at 63-62 on a jumper from the elbow with under :20 seconds left. The Saints turned to Condlin and he was fouled with 4.4 seconds left. Though he missed the first free throw, he nailed the second to send the game to overtime, 63-63.

With his team up 67-65, Burgess' dunk gave his team a 69-65 lead and forced the home team to use its final timeout with 3:10 left. The Saints got a pair of free throws from Edwards followed by a three from Kobis to reclaim the lead, 70-69, midway through overtime. Union got a defensive stop with 12 seconds left, and thanks to a pair of free throws by Hython, took a 77-74 lead. The visitors fouled Kobis at midcourt with 5.5 seconds left and he made the first free throw, and though the second one missed, Al Jones collected the offensive rebound. With the clock winding down, Jones took a fade-away jumper for the tie, but it missed as the buzzer sounded, giving Union the 77-75 win.

Weckworth closed with 14 points, 12 in the second half, while Burgess added 12 for Union. St. Lawrence finished with a narrow 38-37 lead in rebounds, but Union's 48% shooting percentage topped the Saints' 41%. This game featured the third double double for Hython this season.

The Dutchmen are at Clarkson Saturday at 4 p.m.
