SCHENECTADY, NY -- Camille Corbin hit a walk-off grand slam in the opener and had a two-run homer in the nightcap as the Union College softball team swept Castleton State, 10-0 (in five innings) and 9-4 at Alexander Field Wednesday afternoon. The Dutchwomen improved to 12-8 while the Spartans fell to 6-12.
In the first contest, Union scored five runs in the second inning, highlighted by an RBI double by Corbin, an RBI single by
Lindsay Cohen and an RBI double by
Aimee Palleschi. The Dutchwomen tacked on five to win it in the fifth, as all five batters in the inning scored.
Alyssa Wolejko had an RBI single and then after the bases were loaded with none out, Corbin's blasted her fourth of the season for the eight run lead and thus, the victory.
Wolejko gave up four hits and no runs in the five innings while walking one and striking out six. It was her seventh victory of the season. Corbin, Palleschi and
Joanna Chalifoux had two hits each and Corbin wound up driving in five of the team's nine runs. Kayla Wood took the loss with nine hits allowed in four innings, and she struck out three.
Union trailed 1-0 in the first inning of the second game, as Jessica Babcock had an RBI triple. But Union scored four times in the second inning, featuring the two-run homer by Corbin and a two-run double by
Dani Hennel. It was 6-3 entering the sixth and the Spartans made it closer with an unearned run in the top of that inning. But Union got a three-run homer by Wolejko in the bottom of the sixth en route to the triumph. It was her second homer of the season. Corbin now has five home runs in her first season with Union.
Allyson Staats got her fifth win of the season, and did not walk a batter while allowing two earned runs and striking out two. Katie Gagne toook the loss in four innings with five hits and two K's. Union racked up 11 hits in the second contest, with two each from Hennel, Staats, Corbin and
Molly O'Brien. Babcock had three of Castleton's 10 hits and Tori Fearon had two safeties.
Union continues a busy home week with Liberty League doubleheaders Friday vs. RIT (3:30 p.m.) and Saturday vs. the University of Rochester (1 p.m.).
