SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College baseball took games one and two in a four-game set against Skidmore on Friday evening at Central Park "C" Diamond in 4-3 and 17-1 decisions. With the wins the Dutchmen improve to 14-5-1 and 8-2-1 in Liberty League action while the Thoroughbreds drop to 6-17 and 1-11 in league play.
In game one Skidmore took an early lead as Alex Pavelock singled down the third base line to score Mat Marino. The Thoroughbreds would tack on runs in the third and fifth innings to take a 3-0 lead before the Dutchmen offense came alive. In the bottom of the fifth, senior
Joe Bradlee tripled to right field to score freshmen
Logan Schulte and Ken Curran to bring the Dutchmen to within one. After tossing a goose egg in the top of the seventh, the Dutchmen loaded the bases to allow senior Sam Caurso to smack a walk-off single down the right field line to score Schulte and
Anders Goetz to give the Dutchmen a 4-3 win.
Freshman
Jake Fishman got a no-decision after he tossed six innings, giving up three runs, two earned while striking out four. Junior
Chris Pignatello picked up his third win of the season after tossing a scoreless top of the seventh with two strikeouts. Jeb Clarke fell to 0-3 after pitching just a third of an inning and allowing the two runs.
In game two, the first three innings went by without either team able to break through. Skidmore scored their first and only run in the top of the fourth inning when Marino singled past the shortstop to score Pavelock. Union then proceeded to go on an uninterrupted 17 run tear that began in the bottom of the fifth. Union tacked on two runs thanks to RBIs from senior captain
David Peretti and sophomore
Jeff Grasso. Union tacked on four runs in the sixth thanks to sloppy play by Skidmore as three runs were scored unearned. Union's biggest inning came in the ninth when the Dutchmen posted 9 runs, four of them earned, on the Thoroughbreds.
Senior
Dane O'Neil remains perfect on the season after improving tossing eight innings allowing only one earned run while striking out nine. He improved to 4-0 on the season. Andrew Bannon fell to 0-3 after allowing three earned runs in five innings of work. Skidmore used six pitchers in the nine inning contest.
Peretti and Caruso collected three runs batted in on the day to lead the Dutchmen offense. Bradlee also had a triple in game one while Caruso and Curran picked up doubles in game two.
The Dutchmen return to action tomorrow when they travel to Saratoga Springs for the second half of the four game set at Skidmore. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
