SCHENECTADY, NY -- Brianna Godlewski singled home
Lindsay Cohen in the bottom of the seventh to lift Union College to a 5-4 softball win over SUNY New Paltz in the nightcap of a doubleheader at Alexander Field Wednesday. Union won the opener, 5-2, and now stands 17-9 on the season after the non-league twinbill. The Dutchwomen have won nine of 10. The Hawks fell to 9-18.
Union had trailed in the second game, 4-2 with two outs and one on in the bottom of the sixth. But
Allyson Staats blasted a two run homer to center, her third of the season, to tie the contest at 4-4. After a seventh inning one out walk to Cohen and a single by
Molly O'Brien, the runners advanced on a wild pitch. Godlewski then singled down the third base line into left for the walk-off victory. Staats had two hits and the two RBIs while
Alyssa Wolejko also had two hits and drove in a run.
Joanna Chalifoux hit her second homer of the season in the fourth inning, a solo shot to left. Wolejko hit her fourth homer of the season in the first inning, and she got her ninth win allowing eight hits and one walk while striking out three.
The Hawks scored three in the third for a 3-2 lead with consecutive RBI hits by Noelle Grande (a double) a single by Meg Brewer and a double by Chelsea Kull. Kiersten Carlomagno, who took over on the mound in the third inning, hit her first home run of the yeaer in the fourth to give New Paltz a 4-2 lead. Brewer and Grande each had two hits.
In the opener,
Allyson Staats improved to 8-4 win the victory. She alllowed seven hits and one earned run while striking out six and not walking a batter.
Aimee Palleschi had two hits including a two run homer in the fourth, her fourth of the year.
Molly O'Brien had an RBI single in the second and Chalifoux's RBI ground out came in the third.
Dani Hennel drove in a run with a ground out in the fourth before Palleschi's homer.
Shayna Burgess had two Hawks hits, including an RBI double in the third. Brewer drove in the other run with a fourth inning single. Starter Erika Traina gave up two earned runs in three innings for New Paltz.
Union closes out the regular season with key Liberty League doubleheaders at RPI Saturday and home vs. Skidmore on Senior Day Sunday. Union enters the weekend with a 7-1 league record.
