SCHENECTADY, NY -- All three seniors played a role in Union College's softball sweep over Skidmore College Sunday at Alexander Field on Senior Day. The Dutchwomen won the opener, 7-3, and took the second game, 9-2, and improved to 19-11 on the season, 9-3 in league play. The Thoroughbreds are now 12-18 and 6-6 and are the #4 seed in the Liberty League Tournament that begins Thursday.
Senior's
Aimee Palleschi,
Kristin Schmidt and
Alyssa Wolejko were honored between games. Palleschi and Schmidt each had two hits and two RBIs on the day, while Wolejko had four hits, an RBI and a complete game win in the first contest.
In the opener, Wolejko allowed three earned runs and struck out four while improving to 10-6 on the season. Union jumped out to a 4-0 first inning lead with consecutive RBI doubles by Wolejko and
Allyson Staats, later followed by
Camille Corbin's two run homer, her ninth blast of the season. Schmidt hit a two run shot to center in the fourth inning, her first homer of 2014, and Union got an RBI double by Palleschi in the sixht. All nine batters had at least one hit for the Dutchwomen, and
Dani Hennel joined Wolejko and
Molly O'Brien with two hits each. Lila Rosenfeld had an RBI single in the second for Skidmore, as did Mackenzie Whiting in the fifth and also in the seventh. Whiting had two of the nine hits for Skidmore, while Union finished with 12 hits in the game.
Staats won her ninth of the season with a four hitter in the nightcap. She gave up just four hits and struck out four. At the plate, she had four hits and four RBIs. Brittany Osborn opened the scoring for the Thoroughbreds with her first homer of the year in the second inning. Union scored three times in the third highlighted by an RBI single by Staats and a two-out RBI double by Corbin. Union made it 5-1 in the fourth with RBI hits by Palleschi and Staats. Skidmore's lone run in the fifth came on a passed ball. The Dutchwomen sent all nine batters to the plate and scored four times in the sixth, featurin a two run single by Staats and an RBI single by
Joanna Chalifoux.
Union will play at Middlebury in non-league contests Tuesday, April 29. The Liberty League Tournament will be played at either RPI or Rochester Thursday, Friday and Saturday, pending the results of RPI's games vs. Clarkson later Sunday.
