Dutchwomen hold Clarkson to three hits in softball sweep


ALBANY, NY -- Alyssa Wolejko and Allyson Staats combined for 12 shutout innings and allowed only three hits in leading the Union College softball team to a Liberty League sweep over Clarkson at the Plumeri Sports Complex Saturday. Union won the opener 6-0 and took the nightcap 13-0 in five innings. The Dutchwomen are now 7-7 on the season and 2-0 in league play while the Golden Knights stand 0-14 and 0-2.

Wolejko allowed just a two-out, seventh inning double in the first contest. She struck out 16 and improved to 4-4 on the season. Staats had two hits and Lindsay Cohen had a bases loaded three RBI double in the victory. Union got eight hits in the win and put it away with a three-run seventh as the visiting team in the opener.

Union was the visitor also in the second game, as the two contests were originally scheduled to be played in Potsdam. Staats gave up just two hits and the Dutchwomen had nine hits while also benefiting from five Clarkson errors. Union scored three in the first, led 7-0 after three, and added six in the fourth. Dani Hennel had two hits and two RBIs, and Union got three RBIs each from Aimee Palleschi and Wolejko. Wolejko had three hits and Palleschi had two hits.

Union is back in action Tuesday at Middlebury and plays at The Sage Colleges on Wednesday.
