SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Union College baseball freshman and senior pitchers
Jake Fishman and
Dane O'Neil both improved to 6-0 on the season with 5-2 and 11-3 wins over RIT on Saturday afternoon at Central Park.
Fishman tossed a seven-inning complete game with six strike outs. He allowed only one earned run and just one walk. O'Neil pitched eight innings allowing three runs, two of them earned while striking out four. He only allowed four walks and four hits over the eight innings of work.
In game one, after three scoreless innings, the Dutchmen were the first to break through. A single and a steal by Sammy Caruso put a runner in scoring position right away. Senior captain
David Peretti walked and he and Caruso performed a double steal to put runners on second and third. When freshman
Kent Curran swung on a third pitch in the dirt and the ball passed the catcher, Caruso scored. The Tigers catcher then drilled Curran in the leg as he was approaching first allowing Peretti to score and Curran to advance to second. After Curran advanced to third on a fielder's choice, senior infielder
Joe Bradlee knocked in the third run of the inning after hitting a bloop single to shallow right field.
RIT struck for two runs in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to one. Matt Holtby scored the first run on a bases-loaded infield hit that allowed him to score from third base. CJ Bolorin then scored on a throwing error by Peretti as he threw down to second base to try to catch Chris Barr who was stealing second.
After junior infielder
Jimmy Mulpeter reached second on an error by the right fielder, Caruso smacked his third hit of the day to center field to move Mulpeter to third. After Caruso swiped a bag, senior Peretti smacked a single down the left field line to drive in two runs and re-extend their lead to three.
Fishman shut down the Tigers in the sixth and seventh inning to secure the win. Brandon Cohall fell to 3-3 on the season after pitching six innings, allowing five runs with two of them earned.
In game two, the Dutchmen got on the board early in game two when Peretti doubled to right center. After advancing to third on a balk, Peretti scored on a wild pitch to give the Dutchmen a 1-0 lead. After singles by Curran and Fishman, sophomore designated hitter
Eric Egan smacked a ball to deep left center field that scored Curran from second and Fishman from first. Bradlee continued the hit parade by singling through the right side to score Egan and give the Dutchmen a 4-0 lead after one inning.
The Tigers got runs back in the top of the third and fourth innings. In the third, Mike Myers singled through the right side to score Taylor Hogan. In the fourth, Ronnie Canestro scored on a throwing error by Goetz.
The Dutchmen had another big inning in the fourth. The Dutchmen struck for five earned runs thanks to runs batted in by Goetz, Caruso, Peretti, Curran and Fishman.
Union added two more in the fifth innings on a triple from Goetz and a single for Peretti. The Tigers closed out the scoring when Phil Sammon doubled to right center to score Canestro.
Liberty League earned run average leader Rory Little was dealt his first loss of the season after allowing 15 hits and 11 earned runs in just four innings of work.
Peretti collected five hits and three runs batted in on the day to lead the Dutchmen offense. Caruso continued his dominance at the plate by smacking in four hits.
The Dutchmen and Tigers finish their four-game set tomorrow with a double header. The Dutchmen's senior day ceremony will begin at 11:30 a.m. before the 12 p.m. scheduled first pitch.
