Union Falls to RIT, 13-11, in Liberty League Championship Game

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Union staged a fourth-quarter rally, but came up short in suffering a 13-11 loss to top-ranked RIT in the Liberty League Championship held at Tiger Stadium. RIT (18-0) remained undefeated in winning its third straight tournament title. Union (13-3), which was making its third championship appearance in four years, now awaits an NCAA At-Large bid. The NCAA Selection Show is tonight at 10:00 p.m.

Quinn opened scoring just 1:47 into the contest, snapping a shot from close range. It would be Union's only lead of the game, as RIT responded with three goals to close the period, including Matt Hossack's buzzer-beater with one second left on the clock.

The second quarter proved to be the game's turning point. The "U" began the quarter on a strong note with Adam Sands scoring from 20 yards out and Paul Alberti launching a shot from just inside the box to knot the game at 3-3.  RIT then went on a five-goal binge over the next seven minutes to claim an 8-3 halftime lead.

Union chipped away in the second half, due in part to two-goal efforts fro Rob Santangelo, Nolan Stauffer and Jake Quinn.  RIT rebuilt a five-goal lead, 11-6, with 4:26 left in the third quarter on Ryan Lee's 41st goal of the season.  Union showed its resilency in the fourth quarter, outscoring RIT 5-2 to close the gap to within two goals.  A turnover in the game's final minute sealed the win for RIT, which defeated Union for the second time in three weeks.  The Dutchmen dropped a 9-8 contest April 16 on the Tigers' turf field across campus.

In the battle for ball possessions, Conner Hall went 11-for-26 against Tyler Brooks-Lamb, one of the top faceoff specialists in the country. The Dutchmen, however, committed 19 turnovers and finished 0-for-4 on man-up opportunities while RIT went 1-for-3 on extra-man chances.

Four Dutchmen were named to the Liberty League All-Tournament Team: goalkeeper Stefan Basile, defender Adam Sands, Quinn and Santangelo.
