LOUDONVILLE, NY -- The Union College baseball team kept the season alive with an 8-1 win over Vassar in an elimination game in the 2014 Liberty League Baseball Championship Tournament at Siena College Field Friday afternoon.
The Dutchmen, 24-10-1, face the University of Rochester at 11 am. in the championship round Saturday. Union needs to win the first game to force a second winner-take-all contest. Vassar finishes the season with a 19-14 record.
Jake Fishman had two hits and three RBIs while
Sam Caruso (two RBIs),
David Peretti and
Kent Curran also had two hits each.
Andrew Beaule pitched a complete game five hitter, allowing one run and striking out four to improve to 5-1. Joe Lovizio, the first of four Brewers pitchers, fell to 2-6. .Five different Vassar players had a base hit.
Vassar took a 1-0 lead in the third when Brad Kendall had a one out single then later scored on a wild pitch. Union scored four times in the bottom of that frame. Union had conseuctive RBI singles by
David Peretti, Kent Curren and
Jake Fishman. Fishman later scored the fourth run on a steal of home, his second stolen base of the inning. Union added anotehr run in the fifth on a Caruso RBI single. The Dutchmen scored three in the seventh, with an RBI double by Caruso and a two out two run single by Fishman.
