SCHENECTADY, NY -- The Union College women's basketball team forced 31 turnovers and had 24 steals as the Dutchwomen defeated SUNY Cobleskill, 84-44 at the Viniar Athletic Center Monday night. Union improved to 8-4 and the Tigers fell to 1-6.
Natalie Leone scored 15 points and sophomore
Abby Katz and freshman
Lily Abarbanel each had a career high 10 points in their young careers. Leone had a six steals while
Amy Fisher had a game high seven steals and
Meghan Erdman finished with five steals. Another freshman,
Rebecca Shamah, pulled down a team best five rebounds. Both teams had 41 rebounds and Union shot 43% for the night.
Shelby Preston, the nation's leading NCAA Division III rebounder averaging 16 per game, finished with 13 in 29 minutes. She also had a double-double with 15 points. Tegan Matthews added seven points for the Fighting Tigers, who shot 32%.
Union led by 10 at 18-8 just 6:18 into the game. The Dutchwomen had an 11 point lead with 6:11 reamining in the first half (leading 27-16) and then went on a 20-3 run for a 47-19 lead with 38 seconds remaining in the first half. That was the score at the break. Union had 26 of the 47 points off turnovers and forced 16 first half turnovers while recording 14 steals.
The 40 point difference was the largest lead of the night, coming with 18 seconds left on two free throws by Shamah.
The Dutchwomen return to Liberty League action this weekend. Union will play at St. Lawrence on Friday at 6 p.m. and at Clarkson Saturday at 2 p.m.
