SCHENECTADY, NY -- William Hython posted a double-double with game highs of 26 points and 12 rebounds but the Union College men's basketball team lost to the Rochester Institute of Technology, 76-68 at the Viniar Athletic Center Tuesday night. The Dutchmen are now 8-8 overall and 2-5 in Liberty League play, while the Tigers are 10-6 overall and 5-3 in the league.
Hython, who was named to his second straight Liberty League Honor Roll Monday, recorded his fifth straight double-double. He made ine of 14 shots and eight of 10 from the line in 33 minutes.
Deshon Burgess scored 15 points and added eight rebounds, and Ryan Whelpley had 13 points for the Dutchmen. Union shot 36% and made 74% from the line.
The Tigers featured five players in double figures, with J.P. Reagan leading the way with 17 points. Joe Strotini scored 14 and A.J. Horde and Miguel Lopez added 11 each while Casey Bobelis scored 10. Kamron Davis joined Hython's game high with 12 rebounds, leading the Tigers to a 44-34 rebounding advantage on the night. Horde also had three steals.
Union jumped out to a 12-2 start with 4:31 gone in the first half. The Dutchmen led by nine at 20-11 after a three pointer by
Terell Winney with 10:41 left, and led 33-27 with 4:46 left. But the Tigers closed the half with a 10-0 run featuring four points by Reagan, taking a 37-33 lead into the break.
The Dutchmen were within two after a three point play by Hython made it 44-42 with 16:41 left in the second half, but the Tigers wernt on a 16-8 run for a 10 point lead with 8:52 remaining. Union got as close as three after two free throws by
Kevin Weckworth made it 70-67 with 45 seconds remaining, but the Tigers made six free throws down the stretch (including two with 10 seconds left after Union added one with 15 seconds to play).
Union continues a busy three game home week with a league game vs. Skidmore Friday at 8 p.m.
