Dutchwomen storm back for 58-56 win over RIT

SCHENECTADY, NY -- Kate Thompson scored 16 points with seven rebounds to lead the Union College women's basketball team to a come-from-behind, 58-56 win over visiting Rochester Institute of Technology at the Viniar Athletic Center Tuesday night. The Dutchwomen improved to 9-6 overall and 3-4 in the Liberty League while the Tigers fell to 8-9 and 2-6.

Union trailed by 15 points with 13:01 remaining in the second half. Jenni Barra had 13 points and three steals and Natale Leone scored 10 points with nine rebounds. Cailin Schmeer added eight points for the Dutchwomen, who shot 40% for the game and had a 34-28 edge in rebounds.

The Tigers were led by Ashlynn Palmitesso's 18 points. Marissa Maiorano nine points and eight rebounds. Sarah Wolcott and Taylor Burns scored eight oints each and Maria Edwards added five assists and three steals. RIT shot 44%  for the contest.

The Tigers had a 28-23 lead at halftime, and half of those points came from Palmitesso. Union trailed 33-31 with 17:06 left in the second half after two free throws by Leone, but the guests went on a 13-0 run for a 46-31 lead just 6:59 into the second half. Burns hit two straight three pointers to cap that run. Union trailed by 10 at 50-40 with 8:47 to play, but the Dutchwomen went on a 14-4 run in the next 6:22, tying it at 54-54 on a three point play by Barra. It was tied at 56-56 with 14 seconds left after a Thompson basket and she made the free throw for a 57-56 lead, Union's first lead in the game since it was 5-4. Union got the ball back off a steal and Erin Lyons made the second free throw with four seconds left for the two point lead. The Tigers did not get a shot off before the buzzer.

Union continues a busy three game home week Friday night against league rival Skidmore at 6 p.m.
