TROY, NY -- Union College put three players into double figures in points and
Ryan Whelpley had a game and career high 16 rebounds for the Dutchmen, who defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 70-47, in a Liberty League contest at East Campus Arena. Union, which shot 45.9% from the floor while holding the Engineers to 28.1%, improve to 8-4 overall and 2-1 in the league. RPI falls to 3-9 and 0-3.

William Hython led all scorers with 15 points on 7 of 12 shooting, including a three-pointer late in the first half for a 14-point lead at the break. He also had seven rebounds, an assist and two steals in 27 minutes of action.
Deshon Burgess added 13 points and three assists and classmate
Wade McNamara scored 12 points, including five straight at a crucial time in the second half, with four rebounds and three assists. Whelpley added six points to go along with his 16 rebounds, 14 of which were defensive. As a team, the Dutchmen made 28 of 61 shots in the game.
Josh Dugas was RPI's top scorer with 14 points, including four three-pointers. He also had a rebound and a pair of assists. Jonathan Luster also reached double figures, scoring 10 points with six rebounds, a block and two steals. The Engineers were held to 16 baskets - eight in each half - on 57 attempts.
Union led 39-25 at halftime, but Rensselaer chipped away throughout the early stages of the second half, pulling to within six points (42-36) with 14:18 remaining in the second frame. McNamara countered with a three-point basket and a layup to put the visitors in front by 11 points, 47-36, and the Union lead never dropped below seven points from that point. The Dutchmen went on to outscore RPI, 23-7, in the final 10 minutes for the victory.
Union is home Saturday to host Bard at 4 p.m.
