CORTLAND, N.Y. - Although goalkeeper
Laura Aptowitz made nine saves, the Union College field hockey team closed out its season with a 5-0 loss to SUNY CORTLAND (13-4) at White Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Union finished its season with a 6-11 record.
After the teams played scoreless field hockey for the first 20 minutes, Megan O'Brien gave SUNY Cortland a 1-0 lead when she scored off a pass from Sara O'Brien with 20:15 elapsed in the game. It was her fifth goal of the season.
Only 59 seconds later, the Red Dragons upped their lead to 2-0 when Meg Redmond scored her second goal of the season form 15 yards away off a pass by Jillian Vogl.
With 10 minutes remaining in the first half, Jessica Welch gave the Red Dragons a 3-0 advantage when she tallied her 15th goal of the season.
In the second half, Gabby Stein clinched the victory by scoring twice. Her 13th goal of the season made it 4-0 with 10:33 remaining. With 8:20 left, she scored her 14th goal of the year to give the Red Dragons a 5-0 edge.
Stein led SUNY Cortland with two goals while Vogl had two assists.
SUNY Cortland outshot the Dutchwomen by a 20-4 margin. Goalkeeper Kailynne Reinoehl had three saves for Cortland.
