STORRS, CT. - The Union College women's ice hockey team played to a 2-2 overtime tie in its 2015-16 against e University of Connecticut on Saturday night. Freshman goalie
Melissa Black tallied 35 saves, including 15 in the first period, while
Jacyn Reeves and
Jamie Smith scored their first goals of the season.
Union broke a scoreless tie at the 7:54 mark of the first period as Reeves scored the first goal of the season off an assist from
Elizabeth Otten. Less than two minutes later and Smith secured the Dutchwomen's second goal of the evening off assists from
Caitlyn McLaren and
Kathryn Tomaselli.
A minute and a half into the second period and the "U" allowed Caitlin Hewes to score UConn's first goal of the evening off assists from Jamie Fox and Madison Badeau. Both goalies tallied over 10 saves in the rest of the period.
With thirteen minutes on the clock in the third, the Huskies Brittany Berisoff placed a goal behind Black to tie the game up 2-2 and force an overtime.
In overtime, Black kept Union in the game by making three saves on three shots. Union finished with seven blocked shots.
Union will be back in action in an exhibition against Carleton at Messa Rink at Achilles Center on October 10 at 3:00 p.m.
