Skidmore downs Dutchmen, 95-78

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY -- Five players scored in double-figures, as the Skidmore College men's basketball team powered past Union, 95-78, Saturday evening in Liberty League action at the Williamson Center.
 
The Thoroughbreds, who moved into first place in the Liberty League standings with a Hobart loss on Saturday, improve to 15-7 and 12-2 in the Liberty League, while the Dutchmen go to 10-13 overall and 4-10 in league play.

Deshon Burgess had 22 points and eight rebounds for the Dutchmen, and made 11 of his 12 free throws. William Hython and Greg King scored 10 points each for the vistiors.
 
Erik Sanders scored a team-high 19 points and added a team-high five assists. Aldin Medunjanin produced 16 points, five rebounds and four assists, Martin Bedulskij chipped in with 14 points and six boards and Connor Merrill had 12 points. Royce Paris added 18 points, six rebounds and three assists off the bench.
 
The game's opening eight minutes were back-and-forth, as the teams traded baskets. Skidmore managed to blow the game open with a 20-7 run, ignited by a Sanders layup and back-to-back threes by Paris. Ryan Whelpley got a layup to fall to cut Union's deficit to 41-32, but the Thoroughbreds pulled away over the final two minutes of the frame. Sanders drained a 3-pointer with 68 seconds left in the half and Paris drove hard to the basket for a layup to give Skidmore a 48-34 lead into the break.

The Thoroughbreds shooting display continued in the second half, as they went 16 for 26 in the stanza and 6 for 10 from beyond the arc to run away with the 95-78 win.

Skidmore shot 57.9% (33-57) from the field for the game, going 15 for 25 from deep, while Union was 24 of 58 (41.4%) from the field and 6 of 19 (31.6%) from 3-point range.
  
The Dutchmen play at RIT Friday night at 8 p.m.
