Dutchwomen clinch playoff berth with 64-56 win over WillIam Smith

SCHENECTADY, NY -- Jenni Barra scored 16 points and Cailin Schmeer added 14 to lead the Union College women's basketball team to a 64-56 victory over William Smith on Senior Day at the Viniar Athletic Center Sunday. With the win, the Dutchwomen clinched the #4 seed in the Liberty League Championship Tournament, and will play at top seed St. Lawrence Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Kate Thompson had eight points in her final regular season home game, and Meghan Erdman was also honored prior to the regular season finale. Natalie Leone had a team high seven rebounds and Amy Fisher dished out four assists for the Dutchwomen, who held the Herons to 29% shooting.

Chloe Hayter posted a double-double for the guests with 26 points and 11 rebounds and Melanie Patterson had 11 points and seven boards. William Smith got six rebounds each from Lauren Brustein and Gabrielle Eure and outrebounded the hosts, 51-34.

Union had a 24-23 lead at halftime and it was back and forth through the first half of the second 20 minutes. With the game tied for the eighth time at 38-38 with 11:03 left in the second, the Dutchwomen wen ton a 9-2 run for a 47-40 lead with 7:54 left. But the Herons got as close as two with two free throws by Hayter with 3:32 left. Barra hit a big three pointer 11 seconds later. Patterson hit a three with 2:23 left to make it a two point game again at 56-54, but Barra hit another three for a 59-54 advatange with 2:06 to play. After Hayter's two free throws with 1:22 left made it 59-56, Schmeer's three with 53 seconds left put Union up by six and the Dutchwomen made frree throws in the final 36 seconds for the eight point win.

St. Lawrence won both regular season meetings vs. the Dutchwomen, 63-54 in Schenectady and 68-59 in Canton.
