AUBURNDALE, FL. - The Union College baseball team drop both decisions to North Central College (Ill.) to begin their spring break trip on Saturday.
In game one, sophomore
Jake Fishman lost his first collegiate game in Garnet and White after going 7-0 last season. Fishman allowed four runs (1 ER) on six hits in a six-inning complete game 4-0 loss. He struck out five and walked four. Freshman
Jake Vesling broke up North Central's no-hit bid in the top of sixth to record his first career base hit.
In the night cap, North Central jumped out to 4-0 lead in the top of the first off rookie pitcher
Nick Williams. The Cardinals would make it 5-0 in the second. The Dutchmen answered in the fourth as
Kent Curran singled in Jaime Faber.
Following a NCC home run in the top half of the fifth, Union responded in the bottom half of the frame with Fishman RBI single.
Trailing 6-2 in the bottom of the sixth, Union scored four times in the inning to knot the game up at 6-6. Three straight RBI singles from
Anders Goetz,
John McLaughlin and Vesling made it 6-5. The Dutchmen then tied the score with a double steal as
Chris Carbone, who pinched ran for McLuaghlin, stole home while Vesling was tagged out trying to steal second.
Chris Pignatello gave up a leadoff single to Joe Parapone followed by an error from catcher
Harrison Glatt allowed runners on 1st and 2nd with nobody out to begin the seventh. A sac bunt by North Central gave the Cardinals a 2nd and 3rd situation with one out. Following a Union walk to load the bases, Pignatello hit the #8 batter to allow the go ahead run.
Bill Christopher came on in relief and he followed with another hit batter to make it 8-6 before walking the next hitter to make it 9-6.
Curran had a one-out single in the bottom of the seventh but NCC's Drew Sutton got Drum and Faber to strikeout to end the game.
Union will look to rebound with a doubleheader against Keuka College on Saturday.
