WASHINGTON, D.C. -- #20 Williams College defeated Union College, 17-11 in a game played at a neutral site, Catholic University, Tuesday afternoon. The Ephs improved to 3-1 on the season while the Dutchwomen now stand 2-2.
Nancy Palmer scored four goals and Bridget Malicki had two scores and two assists while Natalie Gill scored three times for the Ephs. Williams had a 27-20 ground ball advantage and each team forced 17 turnovers. Union was led by
Emily McGrail's five goals, and
Maggie Comiskey added two with an assist. Margaret Draper made seven saves and Union's
Kim Grinhaus also made seven stops. Union had a 29-27 shot advantage and the Dutchwomen were successful on six of seven clears while Williams was successful on 12 of 14 clear opportunities.
Union's other goals were scored by
Jackie Hagopian,
Haley Gould and
Cailin Pandolfi.
Gill opened the scoring 1:22 into the game and Union tied it just nine seconds later on a
Jackie Hagopian score. The Ephs scored four straight for a 5-1 lead and also led by four goals with 9:14 left at 8-4 and 11-7 as well as 12-8 at halftime, as
Ciara Dudeck scored for the Dutchwomen with just two seconds remaining in the first half.
After a Cook goal, McGrail scored with 26:22 left in the second half, but Williams scored four straight capped by an Alyssa Maddalone tally with 9:43 left for a 17-9 lead. Union scored the final goals, both on free position shots, by McGrail and Comiskey in the final 5:14.
Union opens Liberty League play this weekend with games Friday at Vassar and Saturday vs. Bard (in a game to be played at Dietz Stadium in Kingston, NY).
