SCHENECTADY, NY - The Union College baseball team defeated Clarkson 8-1 in the series finale on Sunday to earn a split on the day. Freshman Andy Labeck earned his second win of the season while classmate Zack Twitchell collected four hits to lead the Dutchmen. Junior Eric Egan ran his hitting streak to 15 games with a single in each contest on Sunday.

GAME 1 

The first game on the afternoon was a pitching dual through the first four innings before Union starter, Adam Ashenfarb, ran into trouble in the fifth. Clarkson tagged him for four runs in the frame with three runs coming on a bases clearing double from Greg Jasek.

The Dutchmen got a run back in the bottom half of the inning with a Chris Carbone sac fly to bring in Egan who singled to start the inning. Union was unable to mount a comeback in the final two innings as Clarkson start, Will Coleman, retired the final six Garnet and White batters in order to end the game.

Ashenfarb is handed his first loss in a Union uniform as the sophomore allowed four runs on hits in 5.1 innings. He had three Ks compared to four walks. Eric Beer pitched 1.2 no-hit innings in relief, allowing just one walk.

GAME 2

Labeck twirled 6.2 spotless innings to move to 2-2 on the year. He allowed just two Clarkson batters to reach third base while striking out six on the day. He lowered his ERA to a Liberty League leading 1.09 with his performance. 

After mustering just three hits in game one, Union got off a to quick start in the nightcap against starter, Jeremy Barber, who came into the game with a sub-1.00 ERA. Six of the first seven hitters for the Dutchmen reached based via a single as Union staked claim to a 5-0 lead after just one inning. Jamie Faber, Kent Curran, Jake Fishman and Jeffery Grasso Jr. all drove in a run in the five-run inning.

Egan beat out an infield single down the third base line in the first to extend his hitting streak to 15 consecutive games. The junior proceeded to steal second to give him a stolen base in six straight games. He leads the team with 10 swipes on the season.

The Dutchmen tacked on a run in each the second, third and fourth to increase their lead to 8-0 on RBI doubles from Faber and Carbone while Curran had a sac fly in the 4th.

Clarkson added a run off reliever Zack Blecher in the eighth before Bill Christopher finished the game with a 1-2-3 ninth.

Union will travel to New Paltz on Tuesday night before hosting Brockport this Thursday night at Shuttleworth Park with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 PM. The Dutchmen will also host St. Lawrence this weekend and before the first pitch on Sunday, Union will be celebrating their 2013 and 2014 Liberty League Championships with a pregame ceremony. The on-field ceremony is scheduled to start at 11:30am at Central Park.
