SCHENECTADY, NY -- Camille Corbin had a three run home run in the opener as Union College defeated St. Lawrence, 5-1 in the first game of a Liberty League softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Alexander Field. The Saints came back to earn a split with a 3-2 victory in the nightcap. Both teams are now 4-4 in league play, and Union is 9-14 overall and St. Lawrence is 11-9 for the season.
In the opener, Corbin hit her fourth homer of the season to spark a five run fourth inning, as the game was scoreless entering that frame.
Courtney Casey had a two out, two run single in that big inning.for Union. The Saints scored their lone run in the fifth with an RBI single by Aisha O'Connor. Union had 11 hits in the victory, including two each from Corbin,
Molly O'Brien,
Joanna Chalifoux and
Allyson Staats. Staats earned her ninth win of the season allowing eight hits and the one run while not walking a batter and striking out eight.
Brady Cooper and Laura Finley had two hits each for St. Lawrence. Emma Gailey had 2 1/3 innings of relief of Kyle Plimpton, who took the loss. She gave up six hits and two earned runs while walking one and striking out three in 3 2/3 innings of work.
The Saints earned the split by scoring the eventual winning run in the sixth inning. O'Connor led off with a double and was bunted over to second. Finley then singled to right center to break a 2-2 tie and Plimpton earned the win. She gave up eight hits and two runs with a walk and struck out four for her 10th victory of the year. Kylee Knight had two hits for the Saints, who got an RBI double in the first by Reakes and another RBI double in the second by Carly Dziekan, as it was 2-0 Saints into the third. In the bottom of the third, Union got an RBI double by Staats followed by an RBI single by Corbin. But Plimpton allowed just one hit over the final 13 batters.
Chalifoux and
Lindsay Cohen had two hits each for Union in the second game.
Union is right back in action Sunday for a non-league doubleheader at SUNY Cortland at 1 p.m.
