Staats walk off homer highlights Senior Day vs. RPI

SCHENECTADY, NY -- Senior pitcher/infielder Allyson Staats hit a walk off home run in the bottom of the seventh to give the Union College softball team a 4-3 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in the first game of a doubleheader at Alexander Field Saturday afternoon. The Engineers came back to win the second contest, 6-1.

The Dutchwomen are 11-18 overall and 5-5 in Liberty League play, while the Engineers stand 16-13 and 6-4 in the league. Both teams end the regular season Sunday with Union playing at Skidmore.

Staats hit a blast to left field as Union came back from a 3-0 deficit for the win. It was her second home run of the year and she also earned her 11th win of the season. She allowed two earned runs and eight hits in seven inning while walking two and striking out four. Camille Corbin, Courtney Casey and Molly O'Brien had two hits each.

Danielle Balestrini had two hits for RPI, and Kristina Weltzin gave up eight hits and two earned runs with three walks and two strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings. Stephanie Caudle had a two run home run in the first inning to stake the guests to an early lead, and it was her third of the season. Morgan Ten Eyck had an RBI single in the second for a 3-0 lead. Union got on the board with an RBI single by O'Brien in the fourth and tied it in the sixth on an RBI fielder's choice by Brianna Godlewski and an RBI ground out by Casey.

Caudle improved to 8-5 on the year with a complete game victory in the nightcap. She allowed nine hits and one unearned run but did not walk a batter and struck out seven. Morgan Ten Eyck and Taylor Ten Eyck had two hits each and Balestrini had two hits. Casey and Corbin had two hits each for the Dutchwomen, while Staats took the loss, giving up nine hits and a walk with two earned runs and four strikeouts.

Taylor Ten Eyck had a sacrifice fly in the first inning but Union tied it in the second on Corbin's fifth homer of the spring. The Engineers broke it open with four unearned runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by a two run single by Morgan Ten Eyck. RPI added an RBI single by Taylor Ten Eyck in the seventh.

In between the games, Union honored three seniors playing at home for the final time, Corbin, Staats and Lindsay Cohen.
