Dutchwomen clinch top seed in tourney with 9-8 win over Skidmore

SCHENECTADY, NY -- The Union College women's lacrosse team wrapped up a perfect Liberty League regular season with a 9-8 win over Skidmore College at Frank Bailey Field Saturday afternoon. With the Senior Day victory, the Dutchwomen will host the Liberty League Championship Tournament Friday (semifinal games at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.) and Saturday (championship game at 3 p.m.). Union is now 11-3 overall and finished 9-0 in league play, while the Thoroughbreds close out the regular season at 12-4 and 7-2 in the league.

This is the first time Union will host the tournament since 2009, the last time they ran the table in league play (with an 8-0 record that season). Skidmore is assured of the #2 seed next week.

Natalie Sullivan and Emily McGrail scored three goals each and Union got single scores from Maggie Comiskey, Ciara Dudeck, Jackie Hagopian and Cialin Pandolfi. Comiskey, who entered the week tied for 20th in assists in NCAA Division III, had five assists on the day. The Dutchwomen had a 24-21 shot advantage and each team recorded 16 ground balls. Union converted three of four free position shots. Kim Grinhaus made eight saves for Union. Jessica Farland caused three turnovers and Grinhaus had four ground balls.

Tyler Phillips led Skidmore with four goals and Spencer Mogran added two while Emma Harris and Caroline Bowne each had one. Megan Kolopsky stopped eight shots for the Thoroughbreds. Phillips also had four draw controls and Kolopsky posted five ground balls.

The contest was tied at 2-2 when Morgan and Phillips scored at 14:48 and 12:07 of the first half for a 4-2 lead. But Union knotted it up again with goals by McGrail and Comiskey before Bowne gave the guests a 5-4 lead with 1:03 left in the first half. Union came out with three straight to start the second half with a goal by Dudek and two tallies by Sullivan for a 7-5 lead with 22:36 left. Morgan scored at 18:50 and Harris 49 seconds later tied the contest at 7-7, the fifth tie of the game. But Hagopian gave Union the lead for good at 12:32 and Sullivan added the eventual game winner on a free position score with 3:35 remaining. Phillips scored at 2:53 but the visitors could not get the equalizer.

Seven Union College seniors were honored prior to the contest, the final regular season game of their careers, Courtney Berg, Haley Gould, Julia Meier, Annie Nelson, Dudeck, Grinhaus and McGrail.
