ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Union College baseball team suffered a two-game setback in the Liberty League playoff race, losing to RIT 5-0 and 11-2 on Sunday. The Dutchman now sit at 11-9 in conference play and four games back in the loss column to RPI, Rochester (both 15-5) and Clarkson (13-5) with four league games remaining in the regular season.
GAME 1Union starter
Andy Labeck and RIT starter Brandon Cohall were matched up in a pitcher's duel as it was 1-0 through six innings of play. The Tigers got on the board in the second with an RBI single.
RIT, however, jumped out to 5-0 lead in the top of the seventh with four runs crossing the plate. Labeck led off the frame with a walk before giving way to
Greg Geisel. The Tigers had back-to-back hits off Geisel leading to two runs before Will Gorman provided the big blow in the inning, a two-run home run to give RIT a five-run edge.
Labeck saw his string of three straight victories snapped as the rookie right-hander took the loss to move to 3-3 on the year. Labeck allowed two runs on six hits in 6+ innings. He walked four compared to two strike outs.
The Dutchmen bats were kept to just two hits in the game, a first-inning single from
Jamie Faber and a fourth-inning single from
Eric Egan.
GAME 2Faber, making his first start of the season, was roughed up in the outing. The Tigers put seven runs (6 ER) on the board, including five in the fourth, against Faber in 3+ innings on the mound. RIT added two more runs off relievers
Jake Vesling and
Joe Ammirato in the sixth and seventh to give RIT an 11-0 lead.
Matt Drum drove in
Devin Coffey with a double to center in the seventh and
Ryan Malone added a sac fly to bring home
Jake Fishman in the eighth to make it 11-2.
Egan had a double to right center in the fourth inning to extend his hit streak to a team-leading eight-games. He now has recorded a base hit in 25 of the last 26 games for the Dutchmen.
Union has two non-conference matchups on the road this week as it will play at Castleton St. on Tuesday before traveling to Williams on Wednesday. The Dutchmen will then close out the regular season with a rematch of the 2014 Liberty League Championship on Saturday and Sunday as they will host the University of Rochester at Central Park. Union will honor its three seniors,
Anders Goetz,
