Dutchwomen lose twinbill to Ithaca

ALBANY, NY -- Ithaca College recorded a pair of shutout victories in non-league softball action Friday. The Bombers defeated Union College, 7-0 and 1-0 in games played at Cathy Cummings Haker Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex. Both Union and Ithaca are now 4-8 on the season.

In the opener, Ithaca scored three runs in both the third and fifth innings and added another in the sixth. The guests had 10 hits and winner Laura Quicker walked two and struck out six for her second win of the season. Casey Gavin drove in three runs with two hits including a triple in the fifth and single in the sixth. Kelly Robichaud had two RBIs and a double in the fifth inning. Nicole Ciricillo also had two hits for the Bombers.

Courtney Casey and Camille Corbin each had a hit for the Dutchwomen.

In the nightcap, Ithaca's Allison Macari and Union's Allyson Staats were locked up in a pitcher's duel through five innings, with the teams combining for just five hits through that time frame. Union's first hit was a leadoff single by Staats in the bottom of the fifth. But in the top of the sixth with one out, Robichaud singled to right. She went to second on a walk then the bases were loaded after a single to center by Capolongo. Jessie Fleck hit a comebacker to Staats who had to go to first to get the out and Robichaud scored for the lone run of the game. Staats got the final batter of the inning to fly to center to end the inning.

Macari earned her second win with the two hit complete game shutout, walking one and striking out three. Staats walked one and struck out eight while allowing seven hits. Capolongo and Robichaud had two hits each for Ithaca and Corbin had Union's other hit.

Union's scheduled games Saturday at the Plumeri Sports Complex vs. Clarkson have been postponed, and the new date is to be announced. Union will return to action on April 7 to host Sage at 3:30 p.m. on campus at Alexander Field.
