Baseball Steals A Win in Split with Rochester

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - With the bases loaded and the score tied in the bottom of the eighth, junior Eric Egan stole home to give Union a 4-3 win over Rochester in game one on Saturday afternoon. However, the Yellowjackets got to starter Andy Labeck early in game two and the Dutchmen could not recover in a 6-1 loss. With the defeat, Union was officially eliminated from Liberty League tournament contention.

GAME 1 (W, 4-3 in 8 innings)

Starters Jake Fishman and Evan Janifer were matched up in a pitchers duel in the first game as neither team could put together a prolonged rally against either pitcher. Fishman pitched his sixth complete game of the year to earn his fourth win. He allowed three runs (2 ER) on seven hits to go along with six strikeouts. Janifer was handed just his second loss as he went 7.2 innings, giving up four runs (3 ER) on nine hits while striking out three batters.

The Yellowjackets got on the board first in the top half of the second as Nolan Schultz deposited a Fishman offering over the left center field fence. Union got that run back in the bottom half of the inning as Egan, who led off the frame with a hit by pitch, came in to score on a CJ Worley sacrifice bunt down the first base line.

The Dutcmen added another run in the third as Jake Vesling scored on a Andy Labeck single to center after the Rochester centerfielder misplayed the ball.

UofR hit another homerun off Fishman in the fourth as Jake Meyerson hit one out to left to tie the game at 2-2.

The game remained tied until the top of the eighth as Rochester took a 3-2 lead as Meyerson was able to scamper home after a Worley passed ball.

Vesling led off the home eighth with a single to left and advanced to second on a Labeck sacrifice. Jamie Faber tied the game with a big base hit to left to bring in Vesling. Egan reached on a fielder's choice and moved over to third on a Kent Curran single to left and an error by the Yellowjackets left fielder. With a base open, Rochester elected to intentially walk Fishman to load the bases with two outs to bring Worley to the plate.

During Worley's at bat, Egan gained a walking lead and when Schultz made a half-hearted throw back to the pitcher, Egan broke for home. He beat the return throw home to give Union a come from behind 4-3 win.

GAME 2 (L, 6-1)

Rochester ended Union's momentum in the second game as the Yellowjackets jumped out to a 4-0 lead off starter Andy Labeck in the third on the strength of a solo home run by Meyerson, his second of the day, and a two-run shot by Brendan Garry. Rochester scored one more time in the frame as Luke Hamilton scored on an arrant throw from Labeck to home plate.

The Yellowjackets scored one more time in the fourth with a RBI single to center off the bat of Brian Munoz and again in the fifth as Hamilton beat the throw home after Josh Ludwig grounded to first.

The Dutchmen avoided the shutout in the sixth with a pinch hit RBI double from Matt Drum to score Curran. However, Union was sent down 1-2-3 in the seventh to end the ball game. With the win, Rochester clinched a berth in the Liberty League playoffs and the Dutchmen were officially eliminated.

Labeck dropped his second straight decision, fourth of the season, after lasting just three innings. He allowed four runs (3 ER) on five hits and struck out two hitters. Yellowjackets starter, Luke Meyerson, won his third game of the season by throwing six innings of one-run ball. He gave up seven hits and one walk compared to three strikeouts.

Union will conclude the 2015 season tomorrow with the final two games of the series against Rochester starting at noon. And before first pitch at 11:30, the Dutchmen will honor the Class of 2015, Worley, Chris Pignatello and Anders Goetz, with a pregame ceremony.
