Dutchwomen win Liberty League lacrosse title, 14-6 over Skidmore

SCHENECTADY, NY -- Kim Grinhaus made a career high 16 saves and Jackie Hagopian and Emily McGrail scored four goals each to lead host Union College to a 14-6 win over Skidmore College in the 2015 Liberty League Women's Lacrosse Championship Game Saturday at Frank Bailey Field. The Dutchwomen won the Liberty League Championship for the first time since 2006 and secured an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs.

The Dutchwomen won their seventh straight and improved to 13-3, the most victories since the 2009 team won 15 games. McGrail, who scored four goals in Saturday's semifinal win over Rochester, joined Grinhaus as the Co-MVPs of the tournament. Other All-Tournament Team players were Skidmore's Emma Harris, Spencer Morgan, Caroline Bowne and Tyler Phillips along with Union's Jackie Hagopian, Ciara Dudeck, Maggie Comiskey, Annie Nelson, Cailin Pandolfi, and Natalie Sullivan.

Grinhaus also had three ground balls and Haley Gould had three draws. Skidmore outshot Union, 25-22 but Grinhaus helped keep the Thoroughbreds scoreless on four free position shots and made 10 saves in the second half. Skidmore had a 13-11 ground ball advantage and forced 14 turnovers. Union was a perfect 12 for 12 on clears and the guests were 11 for 12.

Maggie Comiskey, Natalie Sullivan and Annie Nelson scored two goals each and Comiskey and Jessica Farland dished out two assists each for Union. Spencer Morgan scored twice for the Throughbreds, who got single goals by Emma Harris, Tyler Phillips, Allison Byrne and Paige DiAntonio. Megan Kolopsky made four saves in just under 54 minutes of play in the Skidmore net. Caroline Bowne had seven draw controls. The Throughbreds finished the season with a record of 13-5.

With 17:18 remaining in the first half, McGrail scored on an assist by Jessica Farland. That goal was the 200th of her career, as she became the third Dutchwomen in program history to score 200 career goals. The last to do so was Kristin Joyce '11, who finished with 252, and Molly Flanagan '05 had 217 in her career. McGrail's 234 career points ranks her third behind those two players (Joyce has 299, Flanagan 294).

Hagopian opened the scoring 3:44 into the game but Phillips scored her 55th of the year with 22:32 left in the first half to tie it at 1-1. Union then scored six straight from 19:34 to 12:00, including two each by Sullivan and McGrail. Skidmore scored twice in the final 10:28 and it was 7-3 Union at halftime. The Dutchwomen scored five straight for a commanding 12-3 lead with 1:23 left. McGrail notiched her 49th and 50th during that run, giving her a third straight 50 goal season. Morgan scored #39 and #40 for Skidmore and it was 12-5 before Union tallied twice for a 14-5 advantage. DiAntonio wrapped up the scoring with 2:38 left.

The tourney field will be posted at UnionAthletics.com at approximately 10 p.m. Sunday evening.
