Union Loses NCAA Second Round Game at RIT, 10-9

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – For 59 minutes, Union College had the best team in the nation on the ropes.  In the end, Ryan Lee's goal with 22 second left helped Rochester Institute of Technology escape with a 10-9 win in an NCAA Second Round game held at Tiger Stadium.  Lee's 58th goal of the season gave RIT its first lead of the day, keeping the top-ranked Tigers perfect at 20-0.  Union finishes at 14-5.

Senior goaltender Stefan Basile made a career-high 20 saves to spark a defense that held the nation's top scoring team (18.6 goals per game) to a season-low 10 goals.  RIT had scored 47 goals in its two previous meetings against Union this season.

"It was an incredible effort from our team, and especially from the senior class," said Union Head Coach Paul Wehrum.  "Stefan was the best player on the field today, and I just though our guys played with a lot of heart and determination.  It's a tough way to see the season end."

Union slowed the tempo with a possession game, aided by the faceoff efforts of Connor Hall, who went 14-for-23. Union led 3-1 after the first quarter and went into halftime tied at 5-5. The 15th-ranked Dutchmen kept the Tigers scoreless in the third quarter, and grabbed a three-goal lead (8-5) on Charlie Ross' team-leading 47th goal of the season (third-most in school history).  Ross scored in every game his senior season, a streak of 19 straight contests. Nolan Stauffer recorded his 100th career point with a third-quarter goal.

Lee scored a game-high four goals for the home side, including three in the final quarter to lead RIT's comeback. The Dutchmen had a chance to tie the game in the closing seconds, but Ross' shot from 10 yards out hit a post.

Today's contest marked the fourth time in five seasons Union had reached the Sweet 16.  It also signaled the last game for seven seniors: Stefan Basile, Alex D'Amario, Richard Gregory, Connor Hall, Adam Rosenthal, Charlie Ross and Adam Sands.  The Class of 2015 finished with a career record of 50-21 (.704).
