Union Plays to Scoreless Draw in Home Opener

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – In what has become an early season trend, Union had to settle for its third straight double overtime tie, playing to a 0-0 draw against SUNY Plattsburgh Wednesday evening in the home opener at College Park Field.

Just three games into the 2015 campaign and the Garnet have already played 60 minutes (six periods) of overtime.  At this rate, the rookie class might be sophomores by the time the season ends.

Newcomer Erica Matteo recorded her first shutout, making six saves.  Union's best scoring chance of the game occurred in the 96th minute when Michelle Staples, having just entered the game, launched a shot from the right flank that rolled along the cross bar of the net.  Jessica Farland, moved from midfield to forward in the first half, finished with a team-high six total shots while Breana Derella led all players with four shots on goal.

Plattsburgh goalkeeper Nichole Gibson made 11 saves, including three in the two overtime periods, to keep the game deadlocked.  The Cardinals did not take their first shot until 21 minutes into the contest, but still managed to finish just behind Union in total shots (24-20).

The Dutchwomen continue their homestand on Friday, hosting Montclair State at 4:30 p.m.

Notes: Union played to its first scoreless tie at home since September 2006.
