SCHENECTADY, NY – Junior forward Emily Markarian scored two goals to lead St. John Fisher College to a 4-0 non-leauge victory over Union College at Frank Bailey Field Tuesday night. The Cardinals improve to 11-2 while the Dutchwomen fall to 4-8.
Ashley Maynard made eight saves in over 58 minutes of work and is now 10-1 after the shutout. Amanda Maciol did not make a save in over 11 minutes in the Fisher net. Union's Laura Aptowitz made 14 saves for Union.
St. John Fisher had a 25-17 edge in total shots, and Union had 12 of the 18 corners. Markarian had game highs of nine shots and six on net. Charlotte Leyland led the Dutchwomen with five shots.
The Cardinals opened the scoring just 4:03 into the contest. Keely Samsonik scored her fourth of the season on an unassisted goal, with a shot from the left side 13 yards out. At 20:33, St. John Fisher had a flurry of opportunities from Lauren Fazio. After two of her close in shots were stopped by Aptowitz, but the rebound on the third was banged in for Fazio's ninth of the fall.
With 4:14 remaining in the first half, Reghan Amoroso fed Emily Markarian from the left of the net near the end line, and Markarian tallied her 10th of the season into the open right side of the cage for a 3-0 Fisher lead.
The Cardinals outshot the Dutchwomen, 17-9 in the first half, as Aptowitz had 10 saves in the first 35 minutes. Union had a penalty corner advantage, four to two.
Markarian's second of the game and 11th of the year made it 4-0 at 58:26 with a shot from six yards out to the left of the cage.
Union returns to Liberty League play Friday at William Smith at 5 p.m. before hosting league rival RPI Sunday at 2 p.m.
