SCHENECTADY, NY – Gabby Stein scored 9:29 into the overtime to lift SUNY Cortland to a 2-1 non-league overtime victory over host Union College at Frank Bailey Field Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons, who received votes in this week's NFHCA Division III poll, improved to 14-3 while the Dutchwomen finish the 2016 season with a record of 4-13.
Prior to the game the Dutchwomen honored the two seniors, goalkeeper Laura Aptowitz and midfielder Alexa Steriti.
Aptowitz made 18 saves while Cortland's Kailynne Reinoehl stopped 13. The guests had 30 shots, including 26 in the second half and overtime, while Union had 22 shots for the game. Cortland had a 9-7 advantage in corners.
Stein had game highs of nine shots and six on net, while Hannah Christian had seven shots for Union and joined two teammates with four on the cage.
Union scored the only goal of the first half. Hannah Christian took a corner and after a long shot that was blocked, passed to the middle where Stephanie Resnick tallied from in close on the left side of the net. It was her third of the season and came at 16:33.
The Dutchwomen dominated the Dragons with 19 shots while allowing just four. Reinoehl made 11 saves and Aptowitz stopped three.
But the Red Dragons came back and tied it when Jess Gibaldi broke through the defense and tapped it past a diving Aptowitz five yards out and it found the way into the left side of the open cage. Gibaldi's goal at 59:19 was her ninth of the season and it as 1-1.
At the end of regulation, the Dutchwomen had a 21-18 shot advantage.
Both teams were wide open for opportunities in the overtime session. Aptowitz made two straight saves on Meg Redmond in a five second window at 71:41 and 71:46, and three more stops in a 15 second span during the 74-minute mark. Finally, at 79:29, Stein scored her 16th of the year in close after a feed over from Jessica Welch to the right of Aptowitz and tapped in the game winner.
Cortland outshot Union, 12-1 in the extra session and Aptowitz made seven saves in her final period of play in her career. Steriti had four shots for Union, all on net.
