GENEVA, NY—The Union College women's soccer team's run came to an end with a 5-0 loss against top-ranked William Smith, Tuesday afternoon at Cozzens Field.
William Smith (17-0-0), which posted its 11
th consecutive shutout, advances to the Liberty League tournament championship game for the 15th year in a row. The Herons will face No. 3 seed Rensselaer, which topped No. 2 Vassar 1-0 in the other semifinal this afternoon.
The Dutchwomen finished out their season with an 8-6-4 overall record.
William Smith senior Brie Ruane opened the scoring in the 26th minute, tapping home an Evie Manning header. Ruane netted her second of the day with 4:48 remaining in the first half with a well-placed strike from just outside the 18-yard box.
William Smith added three more goals in the second half to run away with the game.
Lauren Kogelmann made it 3-0 in the 50
th minute and Ruane completed the hat trick in the 60th minute. Ella McMackin capped the scoring, tallying in the 82
nd minute to seal the 5-0 win.
The Herons held the Dutchwomen without a shot on goal, outshooting Union 22-0 shots and a holding a 7-0 edge in corners. Veronica Romines played 81:02 in goal for the Herons, and first-year Alessandra Bryan came in for the final 8:58.
Kelsey Hartsoe played all 90 minutes for Union, making seven saves.
The Herons will host the Liberty League Tournament championship game on Saturday, Nov. 5.
