SCHENECTADY, NY -- Tournament Most Valuable Player Daniel Aronowitz scored a game high 27 points and Cole Teal added 23 to lead Williams College to a 98-90 overtime victory over host Union College in the 2016 Sig Makofsky Tournament Sunday. The Ephs are now 5-0 while the Dutchmen stand 1-2.
Aronowitz and Teal were joined on the All-Tournament Team with Union's
Deshon Burgess and
Wade McNamara. Eastern Connecticut's Tarchee Brown was also named. Aronowitz scored 55 points for the weekend that included a win over Eastern.
Bobby Casey scored 19 points and joined Aronowitz with a team high four assists. Kyle Scadlock had 13 points and a game high nine rebounds and Marcos Soto had four steals for the Ephs. Both teams had 33 rebounds. The Ephs shot 55% for the game.
Union had five players in double figures, led by
Greg King's 17 points. Burgess scored 16 and joined Scadlock with the game high nine boards. McNamara added 15 points and
Kevin Weckworth and
Kevin McNoble had 14 points each for the Dutchmen, who shot 43% and forced 19 turnovers.
Williams jumped out to a 13-0 lead and led by as many as 18 (22-4) in the first quarter, but the Dutchmen came back and only trialed by nine at the end of the half. Williams led by 11 at 52-41 with 7:05 left on a pair of free throws by Aranowitz. But Union went on a 21-9 run to take the lead at 62-61 with 9:43 left on a pair of free throws by Burgess. McNoble later hit a three pointer for a 65-62 lead with 9:18 left and McNamara's three with 5:24 left made it 73-69. But five straight points by the MVP gave the guests a 74-73 lead with 3:47 left in regulation and they got it up to six on a Teal three with 1:48 left at 81-75. But King hit two free throws and a layup and it was 81-79 with 12 seconds left when Scadlock was at the line. He missed the first, made the second, and then with 3.1 to play
Zachary Bouton nailed a three to tie it at 82-82.
Williams never trailed in the overtime and the largest lead was eight, twice, including the final score.
Union plays at Division I Colgate on Tuesday night.
