SCHENECTADY, NY -- Union College senior guard
Deshon Burgess scored a career high 34 points and the Dutchmen defeated Vassar College, 89-66 at the Viniar Athletic Center Saturday afternoon. The Dutchmen improved to 5-5 overall and 1-1 in the league while the Brewers now are 4-6 and 0-2 in league play.
Burgess made 14 of 21 shots and was three for three from the line. He also had four rebounds, three assists and two blocks. He eclipsed his previous points high of 33 vs. St. Lawrence in a Liberty League playoff game in 2016.
Greg King scored 19 points and tied his career high, and joined
Wade McNamara with nine rebounds each. McNamara scored 13 and
Kevin Weckworth added 13 for the Dutchmen, who shot 52% in both the second half and for the game. Union outrebounded Vassar, 38-32.
Alex Seff led the Brewers with 18 points and six rebounds and Mason Dyslin scored 14 with a team high seven rebounds. Jesse Browne added 11 points. The Brewers shot 47% for the game.
Vassar led by seven at 22-15 with 8:10 left in the first half, but the Dutchmen went on a 27-7 run for a 13 point lead with six seconds left, 42-29, and that was the score at the half.
The Dutchmen then opened the half with a 18-6 run led by 11 points by Burgess for a 60-35 lead with 14:04 remaining in the second half. Union led by as many as 27 (87-60) with 2:08 remaining.
Union returns to action for a Liberty League contest at Skidmore next Friday at 8 p.m.
