Dutchwomen win 69-59 over RIT on Senior Day

SCHENECTADY, NY -- Freshman Sophie Borg tied her career highs with 22 points and nine rebounds and the Union College women's basketball team wrapped up the regular season with a 69-59 Senior Day win over the Rochester Institute of Technology. The Dutchwomen finished the Liberty League schedule with an 11-5 record, and are 17-7 overall. RIT fell to 19-6 and 12-4 in league play.

The two teams will meet again Wednesday in Rochester as the Tigers host the Dutchwomen in a Liberty League Semifinal Game. The game time is to be announced.

Borg made seven of 10 shots and was a perfect eight for eight at the line. Erin Lyons and Natalie Leone scored 15 points each and Lyons had a game high five assists. Jenni Barra added 11 points and Amy Fisher pulled down eight rebounds for Union, which shot 39% and had a commanding 49-28 rebounding advantage.
Jessica Glaz led RIT with a game high 23 points along with four assists. Cori Okada had 12 points and Amanda Olsen had 11 points with six assists and a game best three steals. The Tigers shot 37% and had eight steals. Seniors Lyons and Cailin Schmeer were honored before the game.

RIT had a 12-9 lead after a strong defensive first period for both teams, but Union had an 18 point second quarter and led 37-26 at halftime. The teams had four ties in the third quarter. Union led 45-39 after two free throws by Leone with 1:59 left, but the Tigers went on a 9-0 run to close the quarter with a 49-45 lead. Okada had two three pointers in that run.

The game was tied with 7:41 left on the first of two free throws by Leone, making it 48-48. Union then  opened up the game with a 18-3 run for a 66-51 lead after two free throws by  Barra with 1:36 left in the fourth.

Union and RIT split during the regular season as the Tigers were 73-60 winners at home on January 12.
