Baseball posts back-to-back walk-off wins against Skidmore

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The Union College baseball team notched a pair of walk-off wins in a Liberty League doubleheader against Skidmore College on Saturday at Castle Diamond. The Dutchmen improve to 7-4 overall and 3-1 in the Liberty League, while the Thoroughbreds go to 4-8 overall and 1-3 in league play.

In the first game, Skidmore got out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a Hayden Smith RBI groundout.

Kent Curran responded for Union in the bottom half of the inning, driving in Jake Fishman with an RBI single.

Dutchmen starting pitcher Nick Williams and Thoroughbreds starter Andrew Aikins settled down after the first inning, each pitching five scoreless frames.

After Williams kept Skidmore off the board in the top of the seventh, Greg Dougherty drew a lead-off walk in the bottom of the inning before advancing to second on a Devin Coffey sacrifice bunt. The Thoroughbreds intentionally walked Jake Fishman in Union's next at-bat before Jamie Faber sealed the win with a walk-off single to right.

Williams allowed one run with two strikeouts over seven innings for his first win of the season. Aikins took the loss on the mound for Skidmore, surrendering two runs on five hits with four strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings.

In game two, both teams continued to struggle offensively. Dutchmen starter Jake Vesling struck out seven batters and allowed just four hits over seven innings, while Skidmore starter Will Potter gave up seven hits in 6 2/3 innings.

Union's Ryan Kuchar pitched three innings of no-hit relief, striking out three batters, and the Dutchmen finally broke through in the bottom of the 10th.

Eric Egan reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to third on an error on a pickoff attempt by Thoroughbreds reliever Joe Warner. Curran singled to left field in the next at-bat, lifting Union to the 1-0 win.

Faber led the Dutchmen offense, going 3-for-5 with a double, Matt Ferdenzi was 2-for-4 and Egan finished 2-for-5.

Union hosts MCLA at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 5.
