ROCHESTER, NY – Stellar pitching performances from
Jake Fishman and junior
Adam Ashenfarb paved the way for Union College baseball's doubleheader sweep over the University of Rochester
on Saturday afternoon at UR's Towers Field.
Union took game one 5-1 in nine innings and shutout Rochester 5-0 in game two, extending its winning streak to 10 games.
Fishman struck out a career-high 18 batters in a nine-inning complete game, allowing just one run and six hits in the opener while Ashenfarb spun a seven-inning, four-hit shutout in game two for the Dutchmen (14-4, 9-1 Liberty League).
In game one, which was scheduled for seven innings, the Yellowjackets (10-12, 5-5 Liberty League) broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth when Dan Warren delivered an RBI single to right, ending Fishman's shutout streak at 24 innings.
Union managed to scrape a run acorss in the top of the seventh, sending the game to extras.
Jamie Faber drew a leadoff walk and advanced on a sacrifice.
Kent Curran then stepped up and drilled a ground-rule double to left center to score the tying run.
Rochester nearly won it in the eighth, getting the bases loaded from a dropped third strike, a single and a walk, but Fishman sat down a total of four in the inning to escape the jam.
The Dutchmen then erupted for four runs in the top of the ninth. Faber led off with a single and reached second on an error.
Eric Egan reached on an infield single and then Curran got hit by a pitch to load the bases and chase Janifer.
Matt Ferdenzi generated the go-ahead run with a bases-loaded walk. A passed ball made it 3-1 and then two more runs came across on another UR error and another free pass, making the score 5-1.
The second game saw Ashenfarb in control the whole way for Union, not allowing two runners on base at the same time until the seventh when the Dutchmen already held a 5-0 lead. The complete game was his first of the season.
Union opened the scoring in the third inning when Fishman provided an RBI single to left, scoring Ferdenzi for a 1-0 lead. The lead doubled in the fifth after
Jake Vesling singled to center, bringing home
Wiley Knight.
The rest of the Dutchmen's damage was done in the seventh. Curran produced an RBI single and
Harrison Glatt drilled a two-run single through the right side to give Union a 5-0 cushion.
Curran and
Joe Ganim led the Union offense, going 2-for-4 at the plate.
Dan Warren took the loss the mound for Rochester, going 5 2/3 innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
Union takes on Rochester for another doubleheader starting at 12 p.m., Sunday, April 17.
