ROCHESTER, NY – No. 20 Union College (9-2, 6-0 Liberty League) defeated RIT (4-8, 1-4) 13-11 in Liberty League action from Tiger Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Tigers led 7-4 at the half, but were out-scored 9-4 in the second half.
Maggie Comiskey led Union with five points on three goals and two assists.
Jessica Farland tallied three goals, while
Natalie Sullivan scored a pair of goals.
Laura Pacheco had a goal and an assist, while
Jackie Hagopian tallied a pair of goals.
The Dutchwomen won their eighth straight and remain in sole possession of first place in the Liberty League. Shots were 34-19 in favor of Union. The Tigers won the ground ball battle 15-14, while the Dutchwomen won 18-of-25 draw controls. The Tigers went 10-of-14 on clearing attempts and were 5-of-8 on free position attempts.
Sage Sarkis led RIT with four goals. Sammy Ward and Corrina Mandell each had two goals and an assist, while Emily Livecchi tallied a pair of goals. Holly Leone scored a goal, and Nicole Bingo dished out an assist. Mandell led RIT with three draw controls, while Ward won two and was one of five Tigers to grab two ground balls. Sophia Wojnovich took the loss in net for the Tigers, making 12 saves.
Pandolfi opened the scoring, tallying an unassisted goal nearly six minutes into the game to give the Dutchwomen a 1-0 lead. Sarkis answered with a free position goal, tying the score at 1-1. Comiskey and Pacheco scored consecutive goals for Union, giving the Dutchwomen a 3-1 lead on Pacheco's goal off an assist from Comiskey at the 17:53 mark of the half.
Jen Hughes made five saves for the Dutchwomen.
The Tigers offense tallied five straight goals, taking a 6-3 lead on Ward's free position goal with 5:10 to play in the half. Sarkis and Ward each scored two goals, while Livecchi tallied a goal in the five-goal outburst by the Tigers. Union scored with 2:03 to play to cut the lead to 6-4, but Sarkis scored as the whistle sounded signaling halftime to give the Tigers a 7-4 lead at the break.
Union came out firing in the second half, scoring the five goals of the half. Farland's goal with 13:23 to play in regulation gave Union a 9-7 lead. Farland's goal with 18:35 to play tied the score at 7-7. Leone scored her first of the season with 10:50 to play to cut the Union lead to 9-8. She went coast-to-coast, burying a shot into the corner to pull RIT to within a goal.
Comiskey and Sullivan scored two straight for Union to extend its lead to 11-8 on Sullivan's goal with 7:58 to play in regulation. Livecchi tallied a free position goal with 6:32 to play to make it 11-9, and Mandell added two goals late to make it a 13-11 final.
Union plays at Middlebury for a non league game on April 19.
